English
On May 2010, I posted a
question on MJJCommunity forum, trying to find out if a list of all of the
official versions of Michael Jackson's songs existed. I was looking for a complete list. Few people
were interested by this topic and there didn't exist a real complete list, so I
decided to create one. I also decided to create complete lists of the official
versions of Jackson 5 and Jacksons' songs.
The Problem is, there
are errors and duplicates on the list I found on the internet, so my purpose
was to make a list as complete and error free as possible. I began to group
different lists that I found on websites such as Bubblesland, MJFC, MJJC (MJ
Tempest's), MJDatabank and informations found on MJFrance. Then I highlighted
versions according to the site where they were found. For example, when a
version came from Bubblesland, I highlighted it with Yellow. So when a version was found on several lists,
I highlighted it in several colours. On
the other side, when the version had only one highlighted colour, that maybe
meant it was either a mistake or a duplicate.
Then I looked all of the
Discogs for checking each version. I have also listed all record releases for
each version. This step took me a long
time but I have done that just for Michael's solo songs list. I will not
publish the full version of this list containing all discs. I simplified
the list, summarizing the main disc. I
listed all the records I've found, only when it was necessary for some
versions. Then I also checked each release on "Michaeljacksondiscography.fr" web site.
Later, I also scanned
several other sites, like Jackson5abc, (especially for Jackson 5 songs),
MJstrangersite, Michaeljacksoncatalog, MJJVault, Jacksonstreet.nl,
MJJCollectors.com, Korgnex's list, Steve Hoffman Forums, Top40musiconcd, among
others.
For the last step, I
used the book "Michael
Jackson - For The Record" (2nd Edition) to record all relevant information and check the official versions that
are listed. I did the same thing for making Jackson 5 and The Jacksons' lists.
I also added my knowledge
and personal discoveries.
After collecting all
those informations, I grouped them and worked on lists, trying to confirm the
existence and authenticity of the versions, to avoid any errors or
duplicates. I did not simply copy and
paste lists that I found on the Internet.
I did thorough research. I put a
cross by each version that I was sure (or I believe it could be) about, for
finding the versions for which I had no information or I was missing
informations. This allowed me to then list all the questions I would have to
ask.
This is the final step:
Ask around various people, to hopefully find out informations that are missing
from my lists. So I sent questions to some fans that I know to have much
knowledge about Michael's music, but I also sent many private messages to
member of Discogs. This final step was very long winded and it took a long just
to find the littlest of information. For
example, to know what were the correct durations of the remixes for "Is It Scary". Between the countless misprints on the discs and the
fakes circulating on the internet, it was not so obvious.
Once obtained the latest
information, my lists were complete. It has taken me 2 years. It's been hours
and hours ! I can't even estimate the number of hours that I spent so much time
on it. Obviously I have not spent 24h/24 on it, I did that when I had time.
Here are the sites I
have visited to build my lists:

to list the correct durations of the songs. That is to say, the duration
of the music only. The times do not include the silences at the beginning and
end of a track.
Feel free to comment if you have any questions, comments,
suggestions or anything else ! The purpose is to have a list as complete and
accurate as possible !

incredible work!
RépondreSupprimerWOW! glad i could be a help to you! i'm going to be hooked for weeks reading all this.. great stuff! ;)))

Thanks Justin ;)
RépondreSupprimergreat work!
RépondreSupprimerDo you know by chance the exact difference between Fly Away (3:26) (2001 BAD SE edit) and Fly Away (2:46) (1999 BAD SE acetate edit)?
ps: where's Got The Hots & SPYHO?
For Fly Away, no sorry, I have just the durations :(
RépondreSupprimerGot The Hots and SPYHO have only one version, isn't it ?
SPYHO (4:33) is on the 1999 BAD SE acetate
RépondreSupprimerGot The Hots is a few seconds shorter on some KOP cds
Yes, exact for SPYHO !! I didn't noticed this ! Thank you ! I will add it.
RépondreSupprimerI listen to several KOP CDs (french, italian, australian, german, dutch editions) and it is the same version as the one on Thriller 25. The duration is exactly 4:26. On KOP CDs, the sound is lower between 4:25 and 4:26 compared to Thriller 25, but all the versions end at 4:26.
Thank you very much for your coment :)
thank you for creating such a useful list.
RépondreSupprimerIf I may suggest something: To make this list complete please list all official released songs, even if there's not a 2nd version of it (e.g. Just Good Friends).
fly away on 1999 has no intro & outro. compared to 2001 release: song starts at around 0:46 and it fades out just as the adlibs start. the 2001 release has only partial adlibs, full adlibs can be heard on rebbie's version
RépondreSupprimersomeone put your hand out on 1999 acetate is not an early version - it is just an edit of the 1992 pepsi release (some say it is the actual radio edit that got canceled due to the chandler case)
RépondreSupprimersunset driver on 1999 otw acetate has a play time of 3:36
I updated SPYHO and added Sunset Driver.
SupprimerAccording to the book "Michael Jackson: All the Songs: The Story Behind Every Track" (written by
SupprimerRichard Lecocq & François Allard)unreleased OTW SE version and released TUC version of Sunset Driver aren't the same song.
I'll quote the corresponding passage from the book:
"In 2001 Michael wanted to include the 1978 version as a bonus on the reissue of Off the Wall that year, but disagreement with the label scuppered the plan. In November 2004, Sunset Driver finally saw the light of day, in its 1982 version, on the box set The Ultimate Collection."
@patron: Do you have the OTW Bernie Grundmann acetate?
- I only list songs which have more than one version. :)
RépondreSupprimer- Thank you for the detail about Fly Away.
- Ok, thank you for SPYHO and Sunset Driver. I will add/change them.
Thank you :)
becane.. you can add The Jacksons Dr. Pepper jingle.. there are 2 official versions of "Be A Pepper" each lasting around a minute.. one issued on a promotional cd has a quick one-second spoken introduction/voiceover by an unknown male and the version issued on an official cassette tape in 1979 does not feature the intro at all and therefore is a more complete version.
RépondreSupprimerJustin / Waldo
"Be A Pepper" is already listed but I didn't know that there were two versions. The version I listed is the one on the 1995 promo CD "Dr Pepper And Y&R 25th Anniversary" : http://mjofficialversions.blogspot.fr/2012/01/blame-it-on-boogie.html
SupprimerCould you tell me more about this cassette tape from 1979 ? :) I believe I saw this cassette on the Michael Jackson Archives group on FB, but I though it was the same version as the one on the promo CD...
Thanks Justin :)
right! it's the same version but doesn't include the voiceover saying "for Dr Pepper here are the Jacksons featuring Michael Jackson"
SupprimerJustin
Ok ! Do you have the photo of this cassette tape from 1979 ? :)
Supprimeryes.. i have the cassette. here's a picture.

Hi
SupprimerGo in the right pane, there are details for all versions :)
WHOO HOO.. amazing work.. very helpful..
SupprimerWaldo
BECANE.. you have done an OUTSTANDING job. this is by far the best list i've seen like this ever! :-) my #1 favourite blog
RépondreSupprimerWaldo
Thank you ! ^^
RépondreSupprimerThat's why I spent 2 years to do this work... :)
Becane.. i recently discovered this.. you could include it under P.Y.T. - it includes vocals by Michael not featured on the Thriller LP or the demo on TUC in 2004.
RépondreSupprimerhttp://www.discogs.com/Daft-Punk-vs-Michael-Jackson-Daft-Michael/release/176372
the mix is on YouTube for you to listen.
Yes, but it's an unofficial release, so I can't list this mashup. :)
SupprimerAnyway, thank you for this find :)
oh okay. i just thought that since you include other unofficial demo's like Hot Street and She's Trouble you would want to include this mix as it clearly uses vocals from an unreleased demo too.
Love this site. I regularly check it to see what different versions are on what album/single etc. Thanks for all the hard work!
